Ultrasound Imaging for Horses

Ultrasound is a safe and non-invasive procedure that allows for a clear view of your horse's internal organs, tendons, and ligaments without the use of radiation.

Ultrasound uses sound waves that allow for a real-time view of your horse's internal structures. This diagnostic imaging technique can be used to determine the degree of injury your horse has sustained, evaluate the large intestine in cases of colic, guide joint injections, assess ovulation and breeding success, and much more.

Thanks to the real-time evaluation that ultrasonography offers, our veterinary team can work quickly

What Veterinary Ultrasound Can Do For Your Horse

Ultrasound is a versatile tool that allows our veterinarians to evaluate and treat your horse in a variety of ways.

Colic Detection

Horses can sometimes experience colic resulting from a displacement of the large colon. To ensure accurate diagnoses of this health problem, equine veterinarians rely on ultrasonography. This diagnostic tool helps determine whether the colic can be treated medically or if surgery is necessary, providing valuable guidance for both veterinarians and horse owners.

Lameness & Injection Guidance

Veterinarians use ultrasound to understand minor and complex lameness issues. They can be used to determine the extent of injury caused by damage to tendons, ligaments, bone surfaces, synovial fluid, and cartilage. Ultrasound can also help guide your vet when administering regenerative therapeutic injections to ensure the medication gets to the target area.

Urinary System Observation

An ultrasound of the bladder can reveal details about the bladder wall and bladder pouches (diverticula) as well as identify the presence of bladder stones and significant tumors of the bladder. Similarly, an ultrasound of the kidneys can determine if they are correctly positioned and check for blockages, kidney stones, or tumors.

Reproduction Monitoring

Ultrasounds for horses are a crucial tool for monitoring the development of a foal during pregnancy. With this, your veterinarian can accurately determine the stage of pregnancy, evaluate the growth of the fetus, and detect any potential complications.

Thoracic & Abdominal Visualization

Abdominal ultrasound examinations can reveal issues regarding hollow viscera (large organs), solid organs, and fluid abnormalities. Thoracic ultrasound examinations can reveal pleural (lung) irregularities, effusion (swelling), and rib fractures.

Cardiac Monitoring

Cardiac ultrasound, or echocardiography, is a noninvasive diagnostic method that can provide detailed information about the heart. This tool is used. to evaluate and assess the severity of murmurs caused by valve regurgitation or congenital defects.
